Dental Lab Turnaround Time: Industry Standards and How to Improve Them

Turnaround time is one of the most frequently cited criteria when dental practices and labs evaluate outsourcing partners — and one of the most misunderstood. A “5-day turnaround” from a lab in another country means something very different depending on when the clock starts, how the case is submitted, and whether shipping time is included.

How to Define Turnaround Time

When comparing labs, always clarify what “turnaround time” means to that lab:

  • Lab production time: Time from case acceptance (complete, approved files) to completion in the lab. Does not include shipping.
  • End-to-end turnaround: Time from case submission to the restoration arriving at your practice. Includes production + shipping time.
  • Business days vs. calendar days: “5 days” from a lab that operates Monday–Friday excludes weekends. “5 business days” is typically 7 calendar days.

The most useful comparison metric is end-to-end turnaround from scan upload to delivery — because that’s what affects your patient scheduling.

Adding International Shipping Time

For offshore outsourcing of physical restorations, shipping time adds to the end-to-end turnaround:

United Kingdom2–4 business days2–3 business days
Australia3–5 business days3–4 business days

A typical end-to-end turnaround for a zirconia crown from World Dental Lab to the USA: 3–5 days production + 3–4 days shipping = 6–9 business days total. Many clients schedule patient appointments 10–14 calendar days after the preparation appointment to allow comfortable buffer.

How to Reduce Your End-to-End Turnaround

1. Switch to Digital Submissions

The single largest turnaround improvement comes from switching from physical impressions to digital scan files. Physical impressions must be shipped to the lab before production starts — adding 3–7 days internationally. Digital files arrive in minutes. See our guide: Digital vs Physical Impressions: A Lab Perspective.

2. Submit Complete Cases First Time

Cases returned for missing files, inadequate scan quality, or unclear prescriptions add 1–3 days minimum. Submitting a complete, correct case from the start is the most reliable way to get the promised turnaround. See our STL file submission guide.

3. Use Rush Production Strategically

Reserve rush production for genuine emergencies — not routine cases. Overusing rush requests adds cost and can strain your lab relationship. Most labs prioritise long-term partners who plan ahead over high-frequency rush requestors.

4. Outsource CAD Design Separately

If you have local milling capability, outsourcing only the CAD design and receiving STL files back (same day for standard cases) can eliminate all shipping time from your workflow. See our CAD design service.
